Probe Movie Review by Preston Fillagre
Queen of the Damned
Horror films follow a sine curve. Originally, dark and imaginative
masterpieces such as Herzog's Nosferatu and Lang's M artistically
led us into nightmare worlds of disturbing proximity to our own. Then came
parodies of the form that run from Abbot and Costello up to
questionable features like Scream. Now we have Queen of the Damned. Is
it to
be taken seriously, as its richly detailed interiors and textured
lighting in deep focus suggest, or is it tongue-in-cheek commentary on the
purely
fantastic as the over-the-top special effects and tissue-thin
characterizations indicate? Director Rymer appears to have been
unable to make any commitment cinematically with regard to this film's
literature, and it comes out with confused visuals, muddy sound, and
incoherent
narrative. And who is this "Lestat" character, after all? Perhaps some
background on him would have illuminated the shadowy corners of this set
piece
influenced by MTV.
