Advice from Strangers
This week's guest: Bobby Knight
Dear Bobby,
I'm a college student at...
Dear Disrespectful,
Stop. Look at me. LOOK AT ME! When you are talking to me, you will LOOK AT ME!
You will not look down. You will not look up. You will not look away. Are we
clear on that? Because if we are not clear on that, then we are not clear on anything.
I am not "Bobby." I am "Coach Knight." "Bobby" is for the slack-jawed
friends you waste your life with at parties and whatever else it is you do. I don't care, frankly.
I really don't. You, your life, your friends -- it's bullshit to me. I know this: you will address
me as "Coach Knight," or I will explain to you in some other way the reasons that I have
earned that title. Don't you look down. YOU LOOK AT ME!!!
Coach Robert Montgomery Knight
Dear Coach Knight,
Looking back on the whole Indiana mess, what would you have done differently?
Bashful in Bloomington
Dear Bashful,
I've had a lot of time to think about what happened at Indiana. The dust has
settled, and I'm thriving in my new situation here at Texas Tech. Things
look different when you are away from the heat of a situation and, of
course, hindsight is always 20/20. Having said that, I think the main thing
I would have done differently was to arrange for Indiana President Myles
Brand to be sent to some sort of correctional camp program. There are
people who specialize in this sort of thing. It's not that I have a
disagreement with the man. This man just needs to learn that there are some
authorities that you should just SHUT UP and LISTEN TO.
Coach Knight
Dear Coach Knight,
Why do you think so many players transferred from your program before graduation?
Wondering in Washington
Dear Wondering,
College is a very confusing time in a young man's life, full of difficult decisions.
This is particulary true for pussies like Luke Recker, who aren't able to beat off
without asking for someone's help. Why did players transfer from my program?
Probably because the Talbot's in Bloomington didn't carry skirts in their size.
