Castro Executes 5000th Dissident in Honor of Carter Visit
HAVANA (DPI) - In addition to baseball, biotech-factory tours and visiting
the state offices of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, the historic visit of former
President Jimmy Carter was commemorated today with the execution of
Juan Ramon Perez, a Cuban dissident arrested in 1975 for suggesting to a
neighbor that Castro should trim his beard before public appearances.

Held at the state prison Castillo de la Muerte in southern Cuba, the
troublemaker was given the choice between being electrocuted, shot or set to
sea in honor of the 21st anniversary of the Mariel boatlift. Asked for
comment, dissidents had nothing to say to the press.
Carter was not informed of the event as he was attending a traditional Cuban
dinner in Havana where Castro was celebrating the equality of the Cuban
people by being served more food than most see in a month.
