Life Experience Now Available in Schoolbook Form
WASHINGTON (DPI) - Real-life, nose-to-the-grindstone experience, until now
achievable only through a lifetime of backbreaking work, is now available
in a six-week study course offered at select community colleges
nationwide, according to educators. Its creators tout the course,
"Introduction to Hard Knocks in Modern Society," as a convenient way for
students to gain insight into the myths and stark realities of present-day
American life. "We are offering the class in several convenient evening
sessions as an alternative for those students who don't want to face the
toil of raising a family under difficult circumstances, building a
hard-earned career and learning the value of a good honest day's work on
their own," said Lawrence Brandt, adjunct professor of sociology at George
Washington University and founder of the Washington-based think tank Fancy
Book-Learning Institute.
"Our grandfathers usually were able to share their experiences, beginning
with nothing but the shirts on their backs, and offer their kids
appreciation for things like taking what they're given, shutting up about
it, and liking it," said Brandt. "We've collected those experiences and
packaged them up into book form, or for those who prefer to study at home,
into four one-hour audiocassettes."
Brandt hopes to expand the program offering to eventually establish a
College of Hard Knocks at major state universities nationwide. "We never
had this kind of thing when I was growing up," he said. "I had to work for
my experience."
