Advice from Strangers
This week's guests: ESPN's Gary Thorne and Bill Clement
Dear Gary and Bill,
I'm planning a graduation party for my son, and I'd like to have all of
his high school friends over, but I'm worried about keeping it under
control. Any suggestions for keeping the noise and the drinking down?
Nervous Dad in North Dakota
Dear NDND,
GARY: It's crunch time here in North Dakota and you can really hear the
energy in this room. With a capacity crowd of over 300, this place is
united in the spirit of one single goal: To watch your son return home
with a High School diploma. It's been a long road, but for the weary
members of the graduating class of 2002, this is the end of the road.
Joining me is Bill Clement.
BILL: That's right, Gary, the 2002 year was one of a lot of emotions for
this young team. After an early-season shock as two kids were hurt in a
car accident on Homecoming weekend, this group rallied the troops and came
up with the strongest prom in history to end an amazing spirit week and
send its veteran seniors out with a bang. Against the North Dakota State
Police, they're 11-2-1 when partying in homes with a less-than-an-acre
yard, and they've killed off a record thirty-three pony kegs since spring
break. If they can maintain their confidence, NDND, this group should
party safely well into the night.
Dear Gary and Bill,
I'm a girl who hangs out with a bunch of guy friends. None of us are
really seriously interested in one another, but occasionally one of them
will flirt with me one week, and then act like nothing happened the next.
They're all good friends, and I don't want to hurt our friendship, but I
feel like I'm being passed around.
Teased in London, Ontario
Dear Teased,
GARY: It's no fun being tossed around from guy to guy, though it can be
exciting on a night like tonight, Teased. It's Jimmy to Dan. Dan back to
Jimmy, then across to Alvin. Alvin makes his move, checks, and pops you
back out to Jimmy. Jimmy feels pressure, sends you around and you're
picked up by Aaron. Aaron looks to Craig, Craig SHOOTS and you're rebuffed
by Thomas! And Alvin is there, but Thomas grabs you on the rebound. And
with 1:23 left in the evening, you've only had one good scoring chance.
BILL: This doesn't surprise me, Gary. These guys have been all over the
place this year, trying to find a niche, but none of them seem to have the
ability to score. As a team, they have cohesiveness and work well
together, but no one seems to be able to step up and take the challenge. I
think that by the end of the year, you'll want to look at making some
personnel changes, Teased, and sacrifice one or two solid, reliable guys
in the trenches for a superstar who can get the job done.
