Rumsfeld, Powell Address Rift
WASHINGTON (DPI) - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin
Powell spoke openly Sunday on NBC's Meet The Press about their widely publicized
policy rift. "The acrimony suggested by the media is false," said
Powell. "But the policy differences are very real." Rumsfeld echoed
those remarks, saying, "Secretary Powell is, I don't know ... you are
good with words, Tim ... is there a word that goes beyond simply 'coward'?
Is there a word that can somehow describe a man who sees evil but refuses to
confront it? If there is a word for that, then that's the word I'm looking
for." Powell acknowledged the tireless work of Rumsfeld, but also added words of
caution. "Secretary Rumsfeld views the world as if he is in a Japanese
animation series," said Powell. "I see in him the glee of a second-grader, with all of his
Pokemon cards spread out before him, excitedly choosing which cards to play
and what attacks to use. It's not anger I feel, and it's not exactly pity. It's just recognition, like when you notice a toddler has peed his pants. It
happens. It's what toddlers do."
