June 18, 2002 -- France
When one thinks of the south of France, one thinks of gentle Mediterranean waves,
the smell of fresh lemons, and some of the poshest resorts in Europe. Yet after I
saw Nice for the first time this year, the Cote D'azur now evokes memories for me
of fine olives and extreme bodily harm. While perusing the quaint bookshops of
Old Town, I was most surprised to be introduced to local cuisine by a large angry
woman with a rolling pin. Well, as the ignorant tourist, I came to expecting to
be fed some of the Italian-inspired regional cuisine that makes the sun-kissed
hills of this resort area so beloved. Instead, I was introduced to the woman's
three burly sons, who dragged me up the spiraling historic staircases by my ankles,
then tossed me down onto a charming backstreet. The narrow dusty alleys of the
Vielle Ville are unpaved yet surprisingly hard, so I recommend packing a bicycle helmet.
And the emergency staff of L'Hopital Sainte Marie were wonderfully accommodating, for all
of the trouble they took setting and resetting my multiple fractures with caring precision.
