July 1, 2002 -- Brazil
Many things have been written about the crime and poverty of Brazil's urban
core, but I greatly relished the opportunity to upset those stereotypes,
take the back roads to see the real spirit of the city of Rio de Janeiro. My
pre-arranged guide, Alberto, immediately whisked me away to the heights of
the surrounding lush mountainsides, where for a few rials, we took in the
silent and majestic view of the Cidade Maravilhosa. Later, while dining upon
zesty Brazilian appetizers at one of the ubiquitous and varied street-front
diners, I was accosted and beaten savagely by a group of dancers from the
Samba School Parade, a zesty and colorful troupe of youngsters who line the
Sambsdromo to strut their stuff in front of a cheering group of thousands.
Everyone danced and drank well into the night as they passed my battered
body from one to another, each taking a moment to pound my head against the
famous Ebanza stone of Sambsdromo Square, directly across from the
world-famous Copacabana Beach! And the spirit of the carnaval was not lost
on the staff of San Paulina Catholic Hospital, who decorated the entire ER
ward with colorful and festive designs.
