8/6/02 - Bavaria
I began my journey through the German state of Bavaria with two of the
homes of the last independent Bavarian monarch, "mad" King Ludwig who grew
up in the region known as "highlands of the swans," or Hohenschwangau. The
wonderful, almost fairy-tale castle, however, pales in comparison to that
built by Ludwig himself, which he called Neuschwanstein, or "new swan's
castle." Neuschwanstein sits higher upon its mountain perch than
Hohenschwangau, but even at its shallower grade, some tourists shy away
from the road to the top and prefer to take one of the many horse
carriages available instead. I steeled myself and began the climb with
much anticipation at seeing this majestic home above.
My trip was highlighted by spectacular views of the town below and the searing pain of
being trampled by a runaway team of horses frightened by an uncaring
tourist's childish prank. My broken clavicle and multiple internal
injuries were tended to by the most efficient emergency brigade from the
small town of Füssen, a friendly village in the foothills of the Alps,
where I spent the remainder of my trip listening to the happy sounds of
the Hoffbrauhaus from the rehabilitation clinic.
