Comedians Confused Over Whether Limbaugh Still Fair Game
With the announcement of Rush Limbaugh's impending deafness, comedians
across the U.S. are wrought with the moral dilemma of whether
or not they can continue to make fun of the man. "It's a troubling
situation," says Dennis Miller, "I mean, how can we accuse him of not
listening if he can't even hear?" Author/actor Al Franken has shelved his
latest book, "Rush Limbaugh: Ignorant or Just Plain Deaf?" until some
consensus is reached among the left-leaning pundits.
"We're usually okay with making fun of things like someone's weight, their
dyslexia, or the condition of their heart, but we're talking about a man's
hearing!" said Bill Maher, host of ABC's Politically Incorrect. "Look,
there's nothing wrong with calling Limbaugh a fat buffoon. Howard Stern
regularly ridicules mentally disabled people on his show. We can poke fun
at our president for being a moron. We're even okay with insinuating
that a sudden noise will suddenly leave us short a vice president. But
can I make a joke like 'At least now we know Limbaugh will be
misunderstanding everyone equally?' Hell, no -- that's crossing the line."
Will Ferrell of Saturday Night Live, known for his mocking interpretations
of George W. Bush's stupidity and Janet Reno's stiff, Parkinson's Disease
affected demeanor, has sought permission to introduce a Rush Limbaugh
character into his repertoire of characters on the show. "Actually I
want to do two characters on a split-screen," says Ferrell, "with Harey Carey
rambling on incoherently, and Rush Limbaugh leaning in every couple of seconds,
saying, 'WHAT?! WHAT?!' I think it'll be a big hit!"
